Working at Heights and the Roofing Industry
Workplace fatalities have a tremendous impact on families, workplaces and communities. Falls are a major cause of injury and death in Ontario workplaces; the vast majority of these accidents are falls from heights. Even though the height may be no more than two or three metres, most workplace injuries and deaths have happened because fall protection equipment was either missing or not used; these accidents are unacceptable and preventable. Flat roofers are among a category of labourers whose lost time injury (LTI) rates are double, to almost four times higher than the average injury rates for the construction industry in general, according to a 10 year study by the WSIB and the IHSA. Here at Rauth Roofing Limited, we follow a stringent safety regiment that goes beyond the requirements of the Ministry of Labour in order to keep our employees safe.
Rauth Roofing Limited, as well as other employers in Ontario, must provide fall-protection training to workers that are exposed to fall hazards. As of April 1, 2015, employers must ensure that certain workers complete a training program, such as Working at Heights, that has been approved by the Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) and delivered by an approved training provider before they can work at heights.
The Working at Heights Training Program Standard outlines the requirements that must be met by training programs seeking approval by the CPO. The purpose of the Working at Heights Training Program Standard is to establish a mandatory minimum standard for high quality and consistent training for workers who work at heights in the Province of Ontario in order to:
Strengthen workplace safety culture by elevating the profile and importance of preventing falls from heights.
Provide workers who may be exposed to the hazard of falling with adequate knowledge about fall hazards and general safety practices to work safely at heights.
Provide workers who use personal fall protection equipment with sufficient knowledge about its purpose and use; and
Reduce the number of fall-from-heights incidents, injuries and fatalities
